Building technical presentations, or, How to keep folk awake during your next talk

Abstract: Traditionally we communicate science through the media of papers, talks, and posters. Now that we are again opening up it will be time to start giving talks and posters again and many of us will be rusty. In this informal talk we will discuss what makes a *talk* effective and interesting, examining some typical advice and admonitions, and consider the science behind communication. If you’ve never given a talk and are worried about doing so then please come along. On the other hand, if you’ve given many talks and have advice or war stories you’d like to share, please come along. Questions and discussion will be the order of the day.

 Bio: Andrew G. White FAA is an Australian scientist and is currently Professor of Physics and a Vice-Chancellor's Senior Research Fellow at the University of Queensland. Director of the ARC Centre for Engineered Quantum systems, He has been a founding member of three Australian Research Council Centres of Excellence.   He researches in quantum optics, quantum information science and fundamental quantum science. His highly cited publications include work on how to create and detect an optical vortex, sources of quantum entanglement, quantum tomography, and demonstration of the first entangling version of a quantum logic gates.
